Christmas Poem

'Twas the night before Christmas,
he lived all alone,
in a one bedroom house made of
plaster and stone.

I had come down the chimney
with presents to give,
and to see just who
in this home did live.

I looked all about,
a strange sight I did see,
no tinsel, no presents,
not even a tree.

No stocking by the mantle,
just boots filled with sand,
and on the wall pictures
of far distant lands.

With medals and badges,
awards of all kinds,
a sobering thought
came to mind.

For this house was different,
so dark and so dreary,
the home of a soldier,
now I could see clearly.

The soldier lay sleeping,
silent, alone,
curled up on the floor
in this one bedroom home.

The face was so gentle,
the room in such disorder,
not how I pictured
A United States soldier.

Was this the hero
of whom I'd just read?
curled up on a poncho,
the floor for a bed?

I realized the families
that I saw this night,
owed their lives to these soldiers
who were willing to fight.

Soon around the world,
the children would play,
and grownups would celebrate
a bright Christmas day.

They all enjoyed freedom
each month of the year,
because of the soldiers,
like the one lying here

I couldn't help wonder
howmany lay alone,
on a cold Christmas eve
in a land far from home.

The very thought
brought a tear to my eyes,
I dropped to my knees
and started to cry.

The soldier awakened
and I heard a rough voice,
"Santa don't cry,
this life is my choice.

I fight for freedom,
I don't ask for more,
my life is God,
my country, my corps."

The soldier rolled over
and soon drifted to sleep,
I couldn't control it,
I continued to weep.

I kept watch for hours,
so silent and still,
and we both shivered
from the cold evening's chill.

I didn't want to leave
on that cold, dark, night,
this guardian of honor
so willing to fight.

Then the soldier rolled over,
with a voice soft and pure,
whispered, "Carry on Santa,
it's Christmas day, all is secure."

One look at my watch,
and I knew he was right.
"Merry Christmas my friend,
and to all a good night."

The beautiful American Christmas Ornament was made by Bernadette

Christmas is by far my favorite of all holidays.  In addition to its great spiritual significance, spirits are high nearly everywhere you go.  The decorations and music bring back memories of Christmas past and fill you with expectations for the one to come.

A time of joy to be shared with family and loved ones.  There is certainly nothing like seeing Christmas through the eyes of a child.  Their eyes twinkle at the mere mention of it.  It is for this reason that this page is dedicated to boys and girls of all ages.

Gather around boys and girls:

First, I want to make sure that you know why it is that we celebrate Christmas.  Christmas is a Christian holiday that celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ.  He was born in a stable in Bethlehem.  We believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and he gave his life for us.

It is important to be true to your believes and to realize that some people may not share them.  Always be kind to those around you in spite differences of opinion or belief.  There is nothing wrong with accepting your friends as they are and respecting their believes (as you would like them to respect yours) without doubting your faith or what you have been taught.

Did you know that in some countries the day when gifts are exchanged is January 6?  On December 25th Christmas trees are decorated with a star on the treetop.  This represents the star that guided the Three Wisemen who traveled to welcome Jesus and bestowed upon him their gifts.

I have a secret to tell you the best present ever bestowed upon your parents its you.  More than anything in this world they want you to be happy and grow up to be a good person.  I know that during Christmas most of you will behave better, but lets see if we can behave well through the year as well ok??? <smile>

Several weeks before Christmas you will see decorations nearly every place you go.  Don't forget that it is around then that Santa starts to check his list too.  Special treats to those that have behaved and tried their best through the year start to be prepared.  See the importance of behaving well all through the year???

When making your list for Santa, be fair and reasonable.  Santa has millions of children to visit in just one day and he cannot possibly bring everything everyone wants.  I always told my children to ask for just three things and to ask Santa that if he could leave something extra that would be great.  This has worked well so far.

There could be many reasons why Santa Claus might not be able to bring everything you want but the most important thing is that you appreciate and be thankful for what he was able to bring.

By the way, do you have a little brother or little sister???  This is a great time to teach them and share time with them.  I bet you didn't know that they look up to you .... did you??? I have no doubt that you feel very proud to have someone look up to you like that.

Now that we have all that settled lets see what we are going to do with all the things we get for Christmas.  One of the things I have learned about toys is that they are a lot more fun when shared with others.  I mean, you need to play with someone, don't you??? <smile>

So lets gather around and play.  Want to toss a coin to see whose turn it will be to put the toys back in their place after we are finished playing???  No, I want to do it.  The one that puts the toys away is the one that always knows where they are.

The most important thing to remember about Christmas ....It is a time of giving and sharing.

Oh oh...... We better rush .... I think I heard something!
We must be in bed asleep before Santa gets here........hurry!!!

Merry Christmas to all.... and to all a good night!
