It all started one night.
For five nights in a row at exactly 10:00 PM the power would go out.
No television, no computer, no electricity not much more to do other
than go to sleep or light a candle and read a book. The first three
nights I read some books I had been meaning to read for quite a while.
At the most I spent three hours reading each night, the fatigue from the
full day would overpower me and I would fall asleep.
I had reported the power
failures to the electric company. Twice they sent an electrician
who checked all fuses and panels but discovering nothing wrong. They
also had no other reports of power shortages in the area.
Although I had bought a new book to read earlier, on the fourth
night I was too tired to read and decided to go get some sleep instead.
I had noticed from the prior days that the power always went out at exactly
10, so I made sure I did all that I needed to do before that time.
By 10 PM that night I was all snuggled in my bed ready for a full night
sleep.
A few times through the night there were noises that appeared to
come from the den. I dismissed those thinking that the branches outside
could have been scratching the glass on the window. It had not been
but 30 minutes and I noticed the power had come back on. The bed
was too nice and warm to leave though, so I decided to remain in bed.
The following night the same happened. Finding myself unusually
tired in spite a full night sleep I again went to bed early. I
must have been dreaming, the following morning I distinctly remembered
someone asking me my name while I slept. Of course, that was impossible;
there was no one else in the house. No doubt, I had been dreaming.

I had not even
realized it was Halloween until I head knocks at the door. I had been
reading my new book totally disconnected from everything and the knock
startled me. I opened the door to find a group of children trick
or treating. Needless to say I wasn't prepared and I had no treats
for them. The children were disappointed but understood and went to the
next house.

Knowing that soon I would be without power again I prepared my
things for the following morning and got ready for bed. As
for over a week now, by 10 PM I was in bed. I had not completely
fallen asleep when again I heard sounds coming from the den. In the
darkness I searched for matches and lit the candle by the night stand.
My heart was beating so fast and loud that it felt as if it echoed in the
room. Odd, there was no power yet there was light in the den.
I pushed the door slowly afraid of what I might find and not understanding
the source of my fears.
.
What I witnessed was beyond my wildest imagination, transparent
figures gathered around my den motioning one another as if they were
angry over something. I could hear no clear words but there were
sounds in the room, perhaps from their motion, their presence or who knows
why.
They hadn't seen me, or at least that is what I thought. Without
turning my back to the den I walked to the door and left the house.
For minutes I stood outside paralyzed looking at my house not quite knowing
what to do. Suddenly "Are you ok?" said a voice from behind me.
In a startled motion I turned without noticing the hot wax dripping on
my hand from the candle. "Let me help you" said the lady.
I had lived there for
only a few months. I didn't know my neighbors well but I had seen
the lady that stood beside me before. She took me to her house across
the street and after preparing some tea explained all I hadn't been told
before about my new home.
The house had been built where another stood many centuries ago.
My neighbor, Karen, told me several of them had done some research about
the area where our houses now were due to the many unexplained disturbances
that had occurred in the past. My house in particular appeared to
be the center of it all. Many had lived there and all moved shortly
after their first Hallows Eve. No one had ever been hurt, but a couple
of weeks before Halloween and until that day unexplained things happened.
Something that Karen said made me feel at ease, the fact that no
one had ever been hurt. At times fear is a good thing though, it
makes you respect what you don't understand and stay away. Unfortunately
for my ghostly guests, I had lost my fear and stormed back into the house.
I attempted to have a discussion with them but I was being ignored.
Excuse me, but who ever heard of ghosts not going out of their way to scare
humans, huh?
Eventually one of the
ghosts from the group came toward me "Why are you angry and why do you
want us to leave? We don't mean you any harm and we couldn't leave
if we wanted to, this is our home too and where we belong" Saying
nothing further he went and joined the discussion with the other ghosts.
Odd, I couldn't understand the discussion among them, yet the words directed
to me were clear.
He implied that they were always there, but Karen said the unexplained
disturbances were all around Hollows Eve. Perhaps to them that period
of a week or so a year was their whole existence. I couldn't get
the attention of any of the ghosts, thus no satisfactory explanation has
been obtained as to the why of the hauntings and why just for that period
of time.
One thing is for certain, there appears to be no danger to humans
and as the saying goes.... if you cannot beat them, join them.
I still live in the house. There is no danger from the ghostly
figures that start gathering in my den a week or so before hallows eve.
The so called unexplained disturbances vary each year from lack of power
to changes in temperature in the house. I could have moved or even
found a way to exorcise my ghostly guests. Instead, I hold an open
house every Halloween. the ghosts don't even seem to mind we go about our
party.. they go about their discussion (whatever it may be about) and no
one has yet top one of my Holloween parties since. Come on. Join us!!!

Awwwwwwwwwwwwww Thank
you Noel
